Kettlebell handles: what to check before buying

A kettlebell's handle affects how you can hold and move it. Check the shape with the intended exercise in mind before choosing a weight.

Look at the space inside the handle

Check whether your hand, or both hands for an appropriate two-handed exercise, can fit without being crowded. Handle width, thickness and the gap above the bell vary. A label giving only the weight does not tell you how the handle will feel in your grip.

Try a controlled hold with a manageable load if the retailer permits it. Do not test an unfamiliar kettlebell by swinging it in a shop. Notice whether the fingers can wrap comfortably and whether the wrist position feels natural for the movement you have been taught. If you are learning, an instructor can help you distinguish a fit issue from an unfamiliar technique.

Inspect the finish and construction

Look for rough seams, sharp edges, chips or uneven coating around the handle. A very smooth surface may feel different with sweaty hands, while a coarse finish may rub. Do not file or alter a new product to solve a defect; ask the seller or manufacturer about it.

Check the base and overall condition too. The bell should be stored securely on an appropriate stable surface, not left where it can tip into a walkway. A flat base does not make every kettlebell suitable for supporting body weight during a floor exercise. Follow its stated use rather than copying an image from a different product.

Choose the load after the handling check

Different exercises may need different loads, and a weight you can carry may be too heavy for another movement. Choose a load that lets you set up and finish under control. Avoid buying a heavier bell solely because you expect to grow into it; it may leave you without suitable equipment for learning now.

Consider storage, transport and the floor beneath you. A kettlebell is compact but concentrated in weight, so carrying it loose in a normal bag can be awkward. Keep it away from children and pets, and do not drop it onto domestic flooring. The useful purchase is one that fits the planned exercise, your current ability and the space where it will be used, not simply the most versatile-looking shape on the shelf.
